We Animals (WAM) is the world’s leading animal photojournalism agency, partnering with nonprofits, journalists, policy-makers, educators and individuals to tell the stories of animals used for food, fashion, entertainment, labor, religion and experimentation.

Our global network of award-winning photographers and videographers captures visuals from a broad and diverse spectrum of animal industries. Together we have created an expansive stock platform of animal photojournalism available for free to anyone looking to inspire change.

We are looking to add an experienced freelance video and photo editor to our team to support the ongoing selection, editing, preparation and distribution of our visuals, with a primary focus on video. We’re looking for someone excited about our mission and dedicated to working with this difficult subject matter.

Job Details

Type of employment: Contract, freelance, between 1-8 hours per week
Reports to: Managing Director
Works with: Digital Asset Manager, and Editor and Archivist
Location: Remote, global
Start date: Open immediately
Pay range: $30-35 CAD per hour, based on experience
A photographer takes photos or rows of cows who live indoors 365 days a year at a dairy farm.
As an ideal candidate for this role you are:
  • Diligent in your work. Even the thought of cutting corners makes you shudder.
  • Detail oriented. Inconsistencies and errors jump off the screen for you.
  • Flexible. You’re okay with having a higher or lower workload depending on what we have going on.
  • Committed to working with difficult subject matter. This is not easy work to look at on a regular basis, but you have self-care practices and mechanisms in place that allow you to deal with the content of the visuals.
Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and make selects of new image and video content from our global team of contributors for addition to our stock platform, website and social media channels (primarily video)
  • Edit visuals according to WAM’s editing policy, working with WAM’s aesthetics and Code of Ethics for contributors and editors (forthcoming)
  • Upload, rename, add metadata, organize and categorize visuals assets using established taxonomy and organization standards
  • Attend regular Stock team meetings as required
  • Other related tasks as agreed upon from time to time
Other things you may do, depending on skill and need:

  • Create multimedia content for our various platforms

Requirements

  • Must have a passion for the We Animals mission to bring visibility to hidden animals
  • Demonstrated in-depth experience video editing using Adobe Premier Pro, including knowledge of color grading and image stabilization
  • In-depth experience in photo editing using Adobe Lightroom
  • Detailed working knowledge of Adobe Bridge for managing and editing metadata
  • Subscription to Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Premier Pro and Adobe Bridge
  • A computer capable of video editing using 1080p proxies, as well as coloring 10-bit 4K original footage, with an available storage capacity of at least 1 TB
  • Fast and reliable internet connection, with an upload speed of at least 25 Mbps
  • Some experience being exposed to graphic and sometimes violent visuals
  • Fluent in English, both verbal and written
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a remote team (we know most people have been remote lately, but we’re always remote! The candidate must enjoy and thrive in this type of working environment)
  • General IT literacy: must be able to quickly learn and work with new platforms
Bonus, but not required:

  • Familiarity with other image editing and cataloging software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, PhotoMechanic, FinalCut Pro, After Effects, etc.
  • Experience creating multimedia content for social media platforms
  • Experience producing short films
